This policy explains what Decktrace collects and why: on this website, in the app that senders use, and on the deck pages that readers open. We have kept it short and plain.

Who we are

Decktrace turns a deck into a web page: one link that reads well on any screen, in the reader's language, with the facts of how it was read.

Decktrace is run by Company name and address. In this policy, “Decktrace”, “we” and “us” mean that company.

This policy covers this website, the Decktrace app that senders use, and the deck pages that readers open.

What we collect on this website

This website has no forms. You create a Decktrace account in the Decktrace app, and the next section explains what the account keeps.

We do not store your IP address. Our hosting provider needs it to deliver pages to your browser.

  • No cookies. This website does not set cookies.
  • No advertising trackers. We do not use advertising trackers on this website.
  • “Your visit” stays in your browser. The “Your visit” section on the home page shows the time you spent on each part of the page, how far you scrolled, and your device and language. It is worked out in your browser while the page is open. It is not stored or sent anywhere, and it is gone when you close the tab.
  • Fonts. Our typefaces are served from this website. Your browser does not contact Google or any other third party to load them.

If you send decks: your account

When you sign up, Decktrace keeps your email address, your name if you add it, and your password in a protected (hashed) form, never the password itself. We send sign-in codes to that address, and emails about your decks: a new question from a reader, someone opening or coming back to a deck, a translation or deck that is ready.

Your decks, the images you upload and the files you import are stored so that we can show them to the readers you share them with.

The Decktrace app sets a cookie only to keep you signed in.

Payments for paid plans go through Paddle, our reseller. Your card details go to Paddle, not to us. We keep a record of each payment: what was bought, the amount and the date.

We do not use your account details for advertising, and we do not sell them.

If you read a deck: what is recorded

Decktrace shows senders how their decks are read. When someone sends you a deck through Decktrace, the deck page records:

  • when you open the link, even if you do not go on to read the deck
  • which pages you view, how long you spend on each one, and how far you scroll
  • where on each page your pointer moves and where you click or tap, counted on a coarse grid of the page. Exact positions and anything you type are not recorded
  • the deck's buttons you press, when you open the question box, and when you switch language
  • how many times you open the deck, such as a first, second or third visit
  • your approximate location (city and country), worked out from your network
  • your type of device and browser, and the language you read in
  • your email address, if the link asks for it

The sender of a deck sees this activity for that deck, including your email address if you gave one, and may receive an email when you open the deck or come back to it. You are told about this when you open a deck, with a link to this policy.

When you open a link, we note the visit with a one-way code made from the link, your network and your browser. We do not keep your IP address or your browser's full description.

So that a second visit can be counted as yours, the deck page keeps a random key for that link in your browser's local storage, and a reading session in its session storage. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.

Your location is never used to choose your language for you: you can always switch the language of a deck.

Some numbers in a deck can be updated by the sender after it was sent. When you open the deck, you see the current values, and we record which values you were shown.

Questions you ask on a deck

A deck can let readers ask questions on the page they are reading. A question you ask is private to you and the sender: other readers of the deck do not see it.

The thread keeps the page, version and language it was asked on, so the sender can reply in context. You may verify your email address to receive the reply. Senders can use the questions they receive to improve the next version of their deck.

AI features

Senders can ask Decktrace to draft a deck, translate one, or suggest improvements. To do this, the text involved is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic: the deck's text, and for suggestions, the reader's question and the sender's reply. Drafts stay drafts until the sender approves them.

We do not use your decks, your reading data or your questions to train AI models.

Service providers

We use these service providers to run Decktrace. They handle data on our behalf, only to provide their service:

  • Cloudflare hosts this website and the Decktrace app, and stores their data.
  • Resend sends our emails, such as sign-in codes and notifications.
  • Anthropic provides the AI model for drafts, translations and suggestions.
  • Paddle handles payments, as our reseller.

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising. We may disclose information when the law requires it.

How long we keep it

  • Account data is kept while your account is open, and deleted within 30 days after you close it.
  • Decks and uploaded files are kept for as long as the sender keeps them. They are deleted within 30 days after the sender deletes them or closes their account.
  • Reading data and questions belong to the deck they were recorded on, so the sender can see how it was read. They are kept as long as that deck, and deleted with it.
  • Payment records are kept for as long as tax and accounting rules require.

Our database keeps backups for 30 days. Deleted data stays in them, out of use, until they are replaced.

Your choices and rights

You can ask us to:

  • Access. Show you the data we hold about you.
  • Correction. Correct data that is wrong.
  • Deletion. Delete your data, including what a deck recorded when you read it.
  • Objection. Stop using your data for a purpose you object to.

To make a request, use the contact details in the last section of this policy.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects what is recorded when you read a deck, we will update this policy before the change starts.
